Every new install of CiviCRM starts out fresh and clean, with only the built-in data fields. However, as every organisation has its own data needs, we often find ourselves adding more and more custom fields to this. This can easily start to clutter your contact views. An important way to avoid this and manage your custom data fields is to create relevant contact subtypes and assigning your custom data fields to those subtypes.

My first project with CiviCRM goes back to 2006, when I had to deploy a solution to track and report the activities of 25 volunteer activity centers. It ran a beta version of CiviCRM 1.7. It was rather basic, the implementation had a lot of custom code, but it worked. There were a few issues, however, and one of them was that the French translation was incomplete.

At CiviCon 2013 in London I gave a lightning talk on my experiences as an implementer and finished up by saying that my mantra with Civi is “No Coding”. This is just another way of expressing support for Heather Oliver’s blog about using the UI, of course. I spent many years as an application developer, did plenty of coding and enjoyed it. But….the bottom line is that Civi is so amazingly customisable and also extendable that if you can avoid coding you should.

Approximately two years ago, the New York City Public Advocate (NYCPA) began the process of implementing CiviCRM as their constituent case tracking solution. Working with New York City-based Rayogram, Albany-based Lighthouse Consulting & Design, and influenced in part by the New York Senate’s implementation, the office undertook the process of migrating data from a legacy system and configuring the required functionality in CiviCRM.   The result is the basis for all communication tracking with constituents -- the people of New York City.   Providing flexible, efficient, yet powerful tools for managing interaction with organization constituents is at the heart of the CiviCRM application. This intent is visibly realized in the work of the Public Advocate’s office.
