I recently had a requirement to set up a CiviCRM install so that whenever an event (or specific types) was created an organic group would also be created. When someone registered for that event they would be added to the organic group and if they were registered as a teacher they would become the manager of the organic group.

The focus of this blog is on the code implementation of this requirement using rules integration. I wanted to see if it could be done by rules & if that would set a useful precedent. The two aspects of Rules that where the crux of what I was trying to do were not implemented in the CiviCRM Rules module so I will describe them in some detail.

CiviCRM offers an incredible set of features straight out of the box. At NS Web Solutions we're sometimes asked to provide a CRM system with some pretty unique features, and we've found that by relying on CiviCRM's wide array of hooks and customization features, there's a lot that can be done.

Our existing system for managing the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) tracking requirements has worked well for several years. With new state level requirements being issued the lack of flexibility of our current system became apparent. Looking at vendor solutions appeared to stick us with extremely robust applications whereas we need functionality for just a few state and federal laws.

Thinking it would simplify things, I decided to try to set up CiviCRM on my personal Mac (running 10.6.7, or Snow Leopard) so I could do some learning and testing before messing up the server. I did three searches: "OS X", "Mac", and "standalone".

The Drupal core contact module provides a no-frills way for users to email you via a simple webform. If you like that module, but would also like those form submissions to be recorded in CiviCRM, then this no-frills extension is for you.

We had a good CiviCRM meetup in Apeldoorn today, hosted by De Goede Woning. Willem Peters from qbset (http://www.qbset.nl) showed the first version of qbMobile, a native iPhone/Android app that he is developing for a specific customer.
